Last year was a pretty tough year. Actually, it started in December of 07 when mom became seriously ill. Job hunting in 08 was sucky and that's when I knew the economy was going downhill. Then mom died in July. That was not fun, especially when dealing with various weirdo siblings. But I did get a permanent job (at a bank!) and even though the pay is rather dismal, I do have health insurance for now. So when I'm feeling a bit blue, I remember this:

<lj-embed id="9" />

Portland got a fair amount of snow over a week, I think the most actually since 1968. The worst part is driving on hills and corners. A little tricky. Closer to Mount Hood, there's always alot more snow and skiing! Snowshoeing! Nordic skiing! My friend J lives very close to Hood and is used the snow. Unfortunately, her transformer blew and as a result has no electricity, so no heat in addition to no light. And the snow crashed through her roof. It is leaking into her kitchen. She is snowed in as she lives at the end of a private road. She is waiting for PGE and the snowplow guy to get up there soon. Hopefully before dark. Please send good thoughts her way!

    <lj:music>Coming from The Jolly Roger!</lj:music>

So, mom's funeral service was today. She had not wanted to have a service, but she got one and I think she would have been secretly pleased by the attention. It was a good group of people, her nursing school classmates, her kids and their friends (Thanks!), even my aunt and 2 uncles (dead dad's siblings). That was strange as I had not seen my aunt and one uncle since I was 9 or 10. Gotta love those strong family ties!
As crazy and emotional as my brother P was during the last seven months, he really pulled it together and gave a heartfelt and emotional farewell that left everyone teary-eyed. After the service, my siblings and I drove to The Dalles for the interment. Per her wishes, she was cremated and I got to drive her around one last time. We took the scenic Columbia River Gorge Highway for awhile, then zipped out onto I-84 and drove as fast as I could without getting too much attention. (When mom could still drive, she was known to have a lead foot. In a Ford LTD stationwagon). It was beautiful and sunny in Eastern Oregon and the graveside service was short and simple. Her cousin and his wife met us there. Then we went to Historic downtown The Dalles, had lunch, then zipped back to Portland. Collapsed. Drove my niece (who has been staying with us) over to see her dad before he leaves in the morning. Came back, will collapse again shortly.
I had thought of taking something for the day, but I seemed to have felt buzzy all day without any help. I felt a little detached, but not enough to separate completely, thank god! I still haven't thought of the word for how I was feeling today. Kind of numb, but...it seems to be somethings else. I'll figure it out tomorrow. Maybe it was hearing "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" during the service. Sadly, it wasn't the version as sung by Judy.

I want to thank everyone who lit candles, prayed, thought good thought.... Mom is doing so much better. They took the last of her drainage tubes from her back. She is still on a 6-8 week course of antiobiotics and we still don't know how much she will be able to walk, but she is coherent and her color is back in her face. She was moved from surgical ICU yesterday to the general surgery section. When I saw the surgeon on Tuesday, he was pleased with her progress. He was pretty worried about her on Thursday and Friday after the surgery. He said it's a long road still, but he was pleased. I think that coming from a spinal surgeon, that's good! The biggest worry had been because she is 73 and diabetic and the infection was up and down her spine, in her abdominal area, her hand was swollen like a balloon, the concern was surviving the surgery and maybe others. They are looking at other ways to tackle the infection in her abdomen, her hand has shrunk back down (still swollen, but cool, not hot like the other day) and she is speaking. And she can eat! And we can decorate her room for Xmas.
I also got a great B-day present from Plaid. A foot massage! At a foot spa.

A big big thank you to everyone!!!!!

I'd like to give a shoutout to HHHoliday for tagging me on 6 things that make me happy. Okay, here goes

1. A simply fabulous time in NY and Northampton recently was had by me and Plaid. A beautiful wedding, fun with Llamas, walks with Roxy, quality time spent with wonderful friends. And some really good photos, if I do say so myself.

2. My clad in plaid girlfriend.

3. Driving by Plaid's Brightly colored workspace on a grey day.

4. Having Lovelikeyeast finally here in PDX.

5. Friends from out of town coming to visit.

6. Having an incredible soup tonite that involves cauliflowers and apples. Thanks leah_puppette!
